Tyyne Karjalainen is a Research Fellow in the EU research programme at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (2020-) and a doctoral researcher in political science at the University of Turku (2021-). Her research focuses on the EU’s Eastern neighbourhood policies, particularly Ukraine policies, EU foreign and security policies, and EU enlargement. Karjalainen frequently contributes to Finnish media outlets on these topics. Her publications also cover peacebuilding, crisis management, and peace mediation.
Before joining FIIA, Karjalainen worked at the EU Advisory Mission (EUAM) in Ukraine and the Finnish Permanent Representation to the United Nations, among others. She holds a degree from the master’s programme in peace, mediation, and conflict research at the University of Tampere.
Karjalainen is visiting REES for the Hilary Term of 2025. During her time at REES, she focuses on her PhD research, titled “The Eastern Neighbourhood Policies of the EU and its Member States.” Professor Roy Allison acts as her academic advisor.
